Friendship in war, a phenomenon explored through the relationship between Henry and Rinaldi in A Farewell to Arms

In war the smallest unit is always two persons, the two companions, you and your wing-man. With your companion you spend the day, you do your tasks and assignments and you live your life. The intentions of this essay is to show that even in a novel with so few expressions of feelings and affection that A Farewell to Arms is we can still discern this close relationship between Henry and his close friend Rinaldi.

When facing war situations you need to know where your safety lies, you need to know that you can place your life in another person’s hands without fear. You need to actually be friends, not just say that you are friends. The following dialogue is a draft from a conversation between Henry and Rinaldi which shows that friendship is not just a simple word but it is a way for two persons of existing together, respecting each other and living side by side:

“Rinin,” I said. “Please shut up. If you want to be my friend, shut up.”
“I don’t want to be your friend, baby. I am your friend.”
“Then shut up.”
“All right.” (129)

Even though we in A Farewell to Arms meet a paramedic and not a soldier in battle we are still facing a situation of war, a situation that in general is not possible to compare to anything in peace-time. The pressures of war reflect in relationships of all kinds making them stronger and more intense than others in more common and less hazardous circumstances.

Of course, in different situations, in different wars and in different positions the tasks and assignments can be different but one thing remains solid: the relationship. Friendships in these circumstances penetrate deeper than in any other, war is often said to bring out the worst in people but sometimes extreme situations like war can bring out good things as well such as closeness between people that in essence are very different. This is stated very clearly by Rinaldi when Henry has just arrived back to the front from the hospital in Milan: “I’m glad you’re back. You are my best friend and my war brother.” (131)

What is also crucial to mention when studying the relationship of Henry and Rinaldi is that even when they have been apart for quite a long while their relationship is as strong as it has ever been. In the beginning of book three (126-131) we find a very strong dialogue between Henry and Rinaldi as we meet them during their first encounter after Henry gets back from the hospital in Milan. This conversation is full of signs of friendship and affection, it generally shows how good friends they are and that they have really missed each other during Henry’s time away.

On the pages mentioned above we find the following thoughts from Henry that very clearly convey the message and the feeling of the entire conversation: “I was glad to see Rinaldi again. He had spent two years teasing me and I had always liked it. We understood each other very well.” (129)

The particular phenomenon of friendship in war is something that I can relate very much to myself. With the friends from my year in the military service I share an extremely close bond. We may not be the best of friends in everyday life and we do not talk very often. However, on those occasions that we do meet it feels like it was yesterday that we parted for the last time, as if no time at all has gone by and we are just about to get out in the woods and practice once more.

Friendship is unique and special, as shown in this essay it occurs in all situations, war is not exempted but rather a situation in which real friendships occurs in stronger and more pronounced ways. The friendship between Henry and Rinaldi is very deep and of this strong nature that we find in war, as Rinaldi puts it: they are war brothers.

Snart middag

12 05 2008

“Life is never boring, but some people choose to be bored.” – Wayne Dyer

11 05 2008
